Off-Season Expectations
Please Note: The expectations outlined below are for returning players. However, new players are welcome to participate in the activities as well (the earlier you are able to jumpstart your tennis development - the more growth potential you will have throughout your first season and beyond.
Schedule two one-on-one meetings with Coach Corry
All players planing to return the following season must set-up two meetings with Coach Corry during the off-season
The first meeting should occur within a month after a season ends to discuss their off-season plan for development and their goals for the next season.
The second meeting should occur within the month proceeding the new season to discuss progress toward goals and how the player worked to meet the team's off-season expectations
Players can schedule additional meetings with Coach throughout the off-season if they desire addition feedback on goals
Receive regular tennis instruction
Players MUST be receiving coaching in the off-season and showing improvement each year. Players that come to tryouts as a returning player without any advancement in their skill set will not be given a place on the team.
There are many opportunities for instruction in Bloomington and central Indiana that players can utilize to improve in their tennis skills.
Inability to pay for off-season instruction is not an obstacle - but you do need to contact Coach Corry in advance to determine a solution.
Play competitive matches
There are many opportunities to play competitive matches throughout the off-season: Match Day Friday at South, USTA tournaments, meeting up with teammates, etc.
All match formats are acceptable (including short-sets, timed matches, etc.)
The easiest way for players to show coaches they have met this expectation is by submitting their scores before the 1st day of practice.
Tennis development is not one dimensional. To be a well rounded athlete, players need to develop in a variety of areas AND reflect on the growth.
The easiest way for players to show coaches they have met this expectation is by submitting entries before the 1st day of practice.
Please note: all of the expectations listed above (meetings with coach, tennis instruction, match play, etc.) can all be used toward the player development program - the goal is to reflect on the experiences and document your growth
Display Off-Season Leadership (Juniors & Seniors)
Upperclassmen must display leadership during the off-season by participating in and organizing team activities.
Things upperclassmen can do to show their commitment to the program and their leadership role include (but are not limited to):
Meeting the expectations outlined above
Attending optional team practices and summer team conditioning
Organizing player led team bonding activities
Organizing fundraising efforts to gain additional financial support for the team
South tennis will only keep upperclassmen on the JV roster if they are showing an enhanced level of commitment & leadership year-round and a desire to help younger players connect with the team.
